Life Update

Life Update

It's really crazy how you can see a correllation between my lack of posts and midterms/finals season. And by crazy, I mean completely normal.

I've been so inundated with papers and exams for the past two weeks, and the waves just keep coming. But every week that I miss a Mulattea Monday I feel so disappointed in myself. So this week I just wanted a chill rap session where I basically tell y'all what's going on over here in College Park.

I was supposed to graduate a semester early from UMD, which would've put my graduation at the winter of 2019. Instead, I decided to join the communication department's honors program. In doing so, I basically have to take extra honors classes and then write a thesis paper and provide an oral defense of my thesis. I'm actually really excited to start on my thesis, but that won't actually begin until next winter. Luckily that gives me a lot of time to perfect my arguments and my arguments.

If you ever see me looking really stressed out or just sighing for no reason, refer to the above paragraph for why. It's a LOT of work. But hopefully it'll look real good on a resume.

In other news I've been sort of promoted at my job, if you can call it that. Basically instead of just managing a social media page for the Coffee Bar at UMD, we're going to be combining all of the cafes on campus into one social media page. So that's exciting, but also pretty daunting. We're still getting everything in order for that, but you can expect that change by next semester and can follow the pages to see all the fun stuff I come up with.

In other news, apparently all of our favorite actors and producers and role models are rapists now. Carter said to me the other day, "2016: All of your favorite actors are dead. 2017: All the ones that survived are rapists." He's not wrong! I'm just blown away by all of this. It really calls to mind the post-feminist argument, which is basically the same as the post-racial argument: Racism is over, I don't see color, etc. Except it was: Women have equality, we don't need feminism anymore. It's nice to see that this year has managed to squash both of those arguments purely by demonstration. Thanks Charlottesville and Harvey Weinstein.

As it relates to Mulattea, another thing I've been struggling with is writing topics. I'd love any suggestions on content you all might like to see in the future, because I've been running low on ideas. Or I have ideas but want to further develop them before writing a whole article on them, y'know? So PLEASE. If you have any questions or comments or anything-- let me know. Want to know what hair products I'm using? Saw an article and want to know my thoughts? Think I'm a liberal snowflake who needs to toughen up? Having trouble understanding ideas like intersectional feminism or colorism? Leave it in the comments, email me shaynes1@umd.edu or message me on Facebook! I love writing about stuff that I know you want to read. Otherwise it feels like I'm out of touch. So let me know.

That's all I've got. Here are some pictures of my life the past two weeks too in case that wasn't enough. Spoiler alert: It's a lot of food.
